Mathematics Department Major Sheet

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1966 as a main department in the College of Science. Mathematics occupies a distinguished and pioneering position among all scientific disciplines. It is fundamental to every science and is a fundamental element in the development of various sciences, whether natural, biological or social. Mathematics also plays a prominent role in the progress and cognitive explosion that we witness today in the world in methods of thinking, analysis and communication in various industrial, computer and cyber security fields, the world of communications in its various forms and multiple fields, and in administrative and accounting studies.

The academic staff of the Department of Mathematics consists of approximately 33 faculty members and approximately 14 teaching assistant members. The Department of Mathematics is one of the largest departments in the university, as it teaches more than 11,000 students during the academic year distributed over approximately 40 different courses with approximately 330 sections. The department also pays special attention to the educational process, as it works continuously to develop its academic programs through periodic evaluations of the scientific content of the department’s courses. These courses serve not only the department, but also other departments and colleges, such as the College of Petroleum and Engineering, the College of Medicine, the College of Public Health, the College of Allied Medicine, the College of Education, the College of Administrative Sciences, the College of Life Sciences, and the College of Science.

In terms of scientific research, the department encourages faculty members to conduct scientific research in many areas of mathematics and financial mathematics and works to overcome the difficulties they may face in this field and provide the necessary tools for this purpose. The prominent areas of scientific research in the department include the following specializations: Graph Theory, Combinatorics, Numerical Analysis, Algebra, Special Functions, Differential Geometry, Mathematical Modeling Techniques, Differential Equations, Operator Theory, Functional Analysis, Approximation Theory, Topology and Dynamic Systems.

  • The Department of Mathematics awards a bachelor’s degree in:

    • Mathematics, and
    • Financial and Actuarial Mathematics.

  • Skills acquired from studying mathematics:

The mathematics program works to build a practical scientific awareness for students, enabling them to specialize in mathematics to develop broad skills in mathematics and other related sciences. This development is represented in building awareness to develop the ability to analyze data and information to be able to understand a specific dilemma and employ the techniques of pure and applied mathematics in a suitable way to solve that dilemma. Some of the other acquired skills are the ability to make decisions, analyze ideas, communication skills, confront and understand life issues, and organize and manage time.
